This design commemorates the English Peasants' Revolt of 1381, which was the bloody culmination of decades' worth of mounting inequality and unrest in England following the upheaval of the Black Death. Thousands of its participants were executed by the state, including John Ball, the radical priest who is said to have created this slogan. Although the revolt had little impact on "business as usual," it lingers in our memories as an example of popular revolutionary spirit in the premodern West.
